Howell told the jury at Coleraine court that he’d gone to police two years ago and confessed to the double murder because his conscience was troubling him.
The former dentist has already been jailed for life for the murders, but on Monday he was a witness for the prosecution.

The pair made no eye contact and remained silent as Howell passed just a few feet away.
Dressed in a pale grey suit, white shirt and dark striped tie Howell described how his affair with Mrs Stewart began with swimming lessons and guitar lessons before quickly developing into a full sexual relationship.
Howell is expected to be in the witness box for at least two days.
