Jail for beer and cigarette theft

A 26-year-old man from Cookstown who stole from an off-licence in Londonderry, was jailed for a month when he appeared before Londonderry Magistrates Court.

The Court heard that David Monteith, stole beer and cigarettes from the off-licence Drinkx, based at Sackville Street in the Cityside.

Monteith received a one-month jail term when he pleaded guilty to the theft of the items which were worth £32.21.

The Magistrates Court heard that the theft was committed on June 29.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the Court that his client has already “paid a substantial price” for the theft.

As a result of the offence, the Monteith’s licence was revoked and he was also ordered to spend two further years in custody.
